Does wireless charging work with the cards in place?

Not through the card slot. Cards and magnets interfere with induction, which is why the slot should be detached for charging. Another point concerns hotel keys and older magnetic stripe cards: they can become unreadable if kept in close proximity to magnets for a long time. Chip cards and contactless bank cards are not affected by this.
