Can the mat be machine-washed?

No – felt will continue to felt in the drum, shrinking unevenly and losing its round shape. Clean it spot by spot with a sponge, warm water, and a little mild soap, and dab with clear water instead of rubbing. Then let it air dry flat, not on the heater or in the dryer. Do not place hot pots and casserole dishes directly on it: felt is intended as scratch and noise protection, not heat protection. In case of oil or red wine stains, dab immediately, as the fiber is absorbent.
