Description

The chest of drawers that has been in the bedroom for years and for which a new piece of furniture isn't worth buying – when standard handles from the hardware store make every front look the same, leaving the furniture bland

The piece of furniture is intact, the drawers run smoothly, yet it disappears into the room. Buying new isn't worth it, painting is a weekend project, and the real problem lies with every drawer: the standard handle that is identically installed in millions of homes. It works, but it says nothing. If you want to change a piece of furniture without replacing it, you first change the handles – and you can decide whether the fitting should remain functional or acquire its own character. This furniture handle embodies the second option: a handle with a deliberately irregular, wavy contour that looks as if it were bent by hand, with a highly polished silver surface.

What makes this furniture handle different

  • Irregular, wavy contour instead of a straight line – the curve of the handle does not follow any geometric specification but appears hand-formed; on a plain front, this single handle replaces any additional design element, whereas a straight handle visually disappears.
  • Round mounting bases at both ends – the handle does not sit flat on the front but stands on two curved feet; this creates a gap from the surface, and fingers can grip comfortably, even with deep drawers.
  • Vertical mounting over the full height – the handle runs vertically across the front, giving tall doors and narrow pull-outs a linear quality that a horizontal handle would not.
  • Round bar cross-section for a full hand grip – the cylindrical shape rests in the palm of the hand instead of on the fingertips; this is important for heavy full-extension drawers and tall cabinet doors that require a bit of force.
  • Highly polished silver surface – the reflective surface captures the surroundings and creates a bright spot on dark or matte fronts; a matte fitting, in contrast, remains subtle.
  • Multiple sizes and hole spacings – from the short version with 11.68 cm height (4.6 inches) to the long one with 20.82 cm (8.2 inches), plus variants with 96, 128, and 192 mm hole spacing (3.8 / 5.0 / 7.6 inches); this allows an entire piece of furniture to be equipped with a consistent design language.

Who it's made for

For anyone who wants to change a piece of furniture without replacing it. For chests of drawers, sideboards, wardrobes, and bedside tables whose original handles offer nothing. For tenants who are not allowed to make structural changes but can unscrew handles and reattach them when moving out. For plain mass-produced furniture from furniture stores that needs to become more individual. For furniture that has been newly painted and needs suitable fittings. For DIY enthusiasts who refurbish old furniture. For kitchen fronts, bathroom vanity units, and washstands. For dressing rooms, built-in wardrobes, and display cabinets. For studies and studios where a detail with character fits. For holiday apartments and guest houses that want to appear more valuable on a small budget. For home staging before a property viewing. As a gift for people who enjoy renovating themselves. Important note on selection: The crucial factor when buying is not the total height, but the hole spacing – i.e., the distance from the center of one drill hole to the center of the other on the back of the front. Available options are 96, 128, and 192 mm, as well as a knob variant with only one drill hole. Which hole spacing belongs to which total height can be found in the product selection, as manufacturer specifications are not always clear here. Before ordering, measure the existing distance; only if it matches can the handle be replaced without redrilling. If the measurement differs, new holes must be drilled, and the old ones will remain visible. Whether screws are included and in what length can also be found in the product selection; for thick fronts, longer screws are occasionally needed.

Measuring, mounting, proper care

Before purchasing, unscrew the old handle and measure the hole spacing from the center of one drill hole to the center of the other; common measurements differ by a few millimeters, which can already prevent proper mounting. Also, measure the front thickness so that the screw length is correct: Screws that are too short won't grip, and those that are too long will protrude inside and hit the contents of the cabinet. When mounting, support the front from below and do not hold onto the handle. Insert the screws from the back, initially only hand-tighten, check the fit, and only then tighten firmly. Before final tightening, check the alignment: Since the contour is irregular, a handle mounted slightly twisted will be more noticeable on this model than on a straight handle – if multiple handles are next to each other, the waves should point in the same direction. Do not use a cordless screwdriver on a high setting, as overtightened screws can destroy the thread in the wood composite material. For new drill holes, mark the positions, align with a spirit level, and use a template so that all handles are at the same height. When drilling into coated particleboard, use a sharp wood drill bit and low speed to avoid tearing. After a few weeks, retighten all screw connections. Care of the high-gloss surface: A polished surface shows fingerprints and water stains much more clearly than a brushed one – this is part of the look and can only be compensated for by regular wiping. Use a soft microfiber cloth, slightly dampened if necessary, and always rub dry afterwards, as drying drops leave limescale marks. Do not use scouring milk, steel wool, or abrasive sponges, as high-gloss surfaces show every fine scratch. Do not use metal polish, vinegar cleaner, or citric acid, as the surface is coated and these agents will remove the coating. Wipe off grease splashes in the kitchen promptly before they dry. Do not use the handle as a climbing aid or towel holder.

For anyone who wants to change a piece of furniture and needs a screwdriver instead of a craftsman.
