When the umbrella stays at home because it doesn't fit in your handbag

The usual pocket umbrella is 30 centimetres long, weighs half a kilo and therefore stays in the hallway. That's exactly when it starts to rain. The same in summer: Shade would be welcome in the midday sun, but nobody carries a parasol for that. This umbrella folds five times and measures 19 × 5 × 5 cm when folded.

What makes this pocket umbrella special

• Protective sleeve included – the wet umbrella goes into the sleeve instead of directly into the bag with wallet and papers.
• Velcro strap and wrist strap – the strap keeps the folded umbrella slim, the strap secures it when carried on the wrist.

Suitable for commuting, city trips and airports, for festivals and amusement parks with long waiting times in the sun, for handbags and backpacks. The manufacturer does not provide information on the diameter when open, the material of the canopy, or whether the umbrella opens automatically – the span should be enquired about before ordering, as five-fold umbrellas are usually significantly smaller than standard models.

Does it withstand wind?

Not really. Five-fold umbrellas achieve their small packed size through thinner and more articulated ribs, which makes them more susceptible than more compact designs. In gusts, it's better to close the umbrella than to turn it against the wind. After the rain, let it air dry before putting it in the sleeve – otherwise, mildew stains will form in the fabric.
