It's the end of August, half past eight in the evening, and the garden, where you've been sitting all day, is suddenly a black expanse. A spotlight with a motion sensor solves the problem the hard way: it switches to full power, blinds everyone walking across the patio, and turns a summer evening into construction site lighting. Cheap solar lights, on the other hand, light up briefly after being switched on and are out before midnight because the cell and battery are undersized. If you want to use a garden in the evening, you need light that provides structure instead of illuminating an area – dots in the flowerbed, along the path, between the perennials. Set up, charge, store for winter

Before first use, check whether there is a switch on the housing or a protective film on the solar cell – many solar lights are delivered switched off and foiled and therefore seemingly do not work on the first try. Then charge the light for one to two sunny days before putting it into operation for the first time; a fully charged battery at the start extends its lifespan. Choose a location so that the solar cell gets direct sun during the day: a spot in the shade of a hedge, under a tree or on the north side of the house is the most common reason why solar lights do not light up in the evening. The distance to other light sources is just as important – if the light is in the glow of a house wall lamp or a street light, the dusk sensor will not detect darkness and will not switch on. Press the ground spike vertically into soft, moist soil; in hard or stony ground, pre-drill with a rod before forcing the spike in, as plastic spikes will break. Carefully fan out the flexible rods in the desired direction after insertion, without kinking them. Do not place in areas where mowing or grass trimming is done. Regularly clean the solar cell of dust, pollen, leaves and bird droppings, as even a thin layer significantly reduces charging performance – a damp cloth and dry wiping are sufficient. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvent-based cleaners, as they will cloud the plastic cover of the cell. Over winter: During prolonged frost and long dark weeks, the battery hardly charges and deep discharges, which damages it permanently. Therefore, remove the lights in late autumn, clean, dry and store them in a frost-free, dry place; if there is a switch, turn it off. If possible, fully charge once before storing. Re-install in spring and let them charge again for one to two days before assessing night operation.
