Description

The kitchen that's actually still good, but has looked the same for twelve years – when a new front costs a four-figure sum and the standard matte chrome handles make every surface look identical

The fronts are intact, the hinges close, and yet the kitchen looks worn out after a decade. A new front costs more than the entire rest of the renovation, painting is a weekend job with an uncertain outcome, and the actual reason for the tired impression is usually on every door: the standard matte chrome handle, installed identically in millions of kitchens. This is precisely the part that is touched every time and is the first thing visible when entering the room. If you want to change a kitchen, a dresser, or a built-in cabinet without replacing anything, the first thing you change is the handles. These bar handles combine a slender metal rod with a warm brass look and two polished natural stone spheres at the ends.

What makes these furniture handles different

  • Natural stone spheres instead of uniform metal ends – each sphere is cut from natural stone, which means the grain, inclusions, and color gradient vary with each handle; a row of eight handles on a kitchen unit thus looks lively instead of serial.
  • Seven stone variations to match the front – from deep blue to white with dark veining, rose, violet, clear, and green, to beige with black speckles; this allows the handle to match the front color or to be deliberately set as a contrast.
  • Warm brass look instead of cold chrome – the brushed gold tone absorbs light instead of reflecting it harshly, and suits wood, white fronts, and dark colors equally well; matte chrome quickly looks technical next to natural materials.
  • Five hole spacings from 9.6 to 38.4 cm (3.7 to 15.1 inches) – the small sizes fit drawers and narrow pull-outs, the large ones fit wide cabinet doors and refrigerator fronts; this allows an entire kitchen to be equipped in one design language, instead of having to mix two handle series.
  • Round bar cross-section for a full-hand grip – the cylindrical shape rests in the palm of the hand, not on the fingertips; this is important for heavy full pull-outs with pots, where a flat edge handle can cut into the fingers.
  • Mounting with two drill holes – the handle is secured at two points and therefore cannot twist, as happens over time with single-point attached knobs.

Who it's for

For anyone who wants to visually refresh a kitchen without replacing fronts. For tenants who are not allowed to make structural changes, but can unscrew the old handles and reattach them when moving out. For people who want to personalize a used kitchen or a standard kitchen from a furniture store. For dressers, sideboards, wardrobes, and nightstands where the original handles do not match the rest of the room. For bathroom vanity units and washstands. For wine cabinets, home bars, and display cases. For furniture that has been newly painted and needs matching fittings. For DIY enthusiasts who refurbish and restore old furniture. For dressing rooms and walk-in closets where many identical doors need a clean line. For vacation rentals and guesthouses that need to appear more upscale on a small budget. For home staging before a property viewing. Important note on selection: The price applies to a single handle – for a kitchen unit, the quantity must be adjusted accordingly. The length specifications refer to the hole spacing, i.e., the distance from hole to hole, not the overall length of the handle; the stone spheres extend beyond both ends. Before ordering, measure the existing hole spacing on the back of the front; then the handle can be replaced without re-drilling. If the measurement differs, new holes must be drilled, and the old ones will remain visible. As it is natural stone, the color, grain, and inclusions will differ from the product photo; with multiple handles, the stones will vary among themselves. Whether screws are included and in what length can be found in the product selection – for thick fronts, longer screws may occasionally be needed.

Measure, install, properly maintain

Before purchasing, unscrew the old handle and measure the hole spacing from the center of one hole to the center of the other; common measurements differ by a few millimeters, which may already prevent proper installation. Also measure the front thickness to ensure the screw length is correct: Screws that are too short will not grip, and screws that are too long will protrude inside and hit the cabinet contents. For installation, remove the old handles and do not hold the fronts by the handle, but support them from below. Screw in the new handles from the back and initially only hand-tighten them, then check the fit and only then tighten them firmly. Do not use a cordless screwdriver at a high setting – overtightened screws pull the stone against the metal and can chip the sphere. For new drill holes, mark the positions in advance, align with a spirit level, and use a drilling template or a piece of cardboard as a guide so that all handles are at the same height. Drill into coated particle board with a sharp wood drill bit and low speed to avoid tearing out the front. After installation, retighten all handles after a few weeks, as screw connections in wood materials settle. For cleaning, use a soft, slightly damp cloth and then wipe dry. Do not use acidic or alkaline cleaners, no vinegar cleaner, no citric acid, and no abrasive cleaners: Many natural stones are pressure-sensitive or calcareous and will become permanently dull and rough from acid. Also, do not use metal polish or alcohol-based sprays, as the brass look is a surface coating that will be worn away. Wipe off grease splashes in the kitchen promptly before they penetrate the stone surface. Do not use the handles as a step or towel rail, as the stone spheres are selectively glued and can break off under strong pull. If the spheres are loose, replace the handle instead of re-gluing.

For anyone who wants to change a kitchen and needs a screwdriver for it instead of a craftsman.
