Description

The kitchen that is still good but has looked the same for twelve years – when a new front costs four figures and the standard brushed chrome handle makes every surface look the same

The fronts are intact, the pull-outs work, and yet the room looks tired after a decade. A new kitchen front costs more than the rest of the renovation, and the real reason for the dull impression is attached to every door: the standard handle, identically installed in millions of kitchens. It is touched with every grasp and is the first thing seen upon entering the room. If you want to change a kitchen, a dresser, or a built-in wardrobe without replacing anything, first change the handles – and you can decide whether the fitting should remain functional or take on its own form. This furniture handle takes the second option: an organically curved contour with a high-gloss polished surface, which looks like a cast detail on the front.

What makes this furniture handle different

  • Curved shape instead of straight edge – the softly flowing top edge gives the front a contour that a rectangular fitting does not create; on a simple wooden or lacquered surface, this one handle replaces every additional design element.
  • Projection of 2.8 cm (1.1 inches) – the handle projects far enough for fingers to fully grip underneath, but remains flat enough not to get caught on clothing in narrow passages and on kitchen islands.
  • High-gloss polished surface – the reflective surface absorbs the surroundings and creates a bright spot on dark fronts; especially on matte wood or muted lacquer, this creates a contrast that a matte fitting fails to deliver.
  • Rounded underside without sharp edge – the contact surface for the fingers is continuously curved, so it doesn't cut in when opening heavy pull-outs, as is the case with flat edge handles.
  • Two-point screw fastening with 3.2 cm hole spacing (1.3 inches) – the handle is secured with two drill holes and therefore cannot twist, unlike single-point knobs that loosen and become crooked over time.
  • Weight of 78 g (2.8 oz) for a compact size – the noticeable weight in the hand distinguishes a solid fitting from thin-walled hollow parts, which feel light and cheap to the touch.

Who it's for

For anyone who wants to visually refresh a kitchen without changing fronts. For tenants who are not allowed to make structural changes, but can unscrew handles and reattach them when moving out. For people who want to personalize a standard kitchen from a furniture store. For dressers, sideboards, wardrobes, and nightstands whose original handles don't match the room. For bathroom vanity units and washstands. For wine cabinets, home bars, and display cabinets. For furniture that has been newly painted and needs suitable fittings. For DIY enthusiasts who refurbish old furniture. For dressing rooms and built-in wardrobes where many identical doors need a recurring detail. For holiday apartments and guesthouses that need to look more valuable on a small budget. For home staging before a property viewing. Important note on selection: The price is for a single handle – for a kitchen unit, the quantity must be selected accordingly. The handle measures 4.5 × 3.0 cm with a projection of 2.8 cm (1.8 × 1.2 × 1.1 inches) and is mounted using two holes with a 3.2 cm spacing. Before ordering, measure from the center of the hole to the center of the hole on the back of the existing front; 32 mm is a common standard size, which means that replacement in many kitchens is possible without re-drilling. Screws of 22 mm and 25 mm length are included, covering common front thicknesses. The manufacturer's information regarding the surface is contradictory: the text mentions brass, but the illustrated version is silver. Which color variants are actually available should be taken from the product selection.

Measuring, mounting, proper care

Before purchasing, unscrew the old handle and measure the hole spacing from the center of the hole to the center of the hole; common dimensions differ by a few millimeters, which means it will no longer fit during assembly. Measure the front thickness and choose the appropriate screw length from the two enclosed: Screws that are too short will not grip, and those that are too long will protrude inwards and hit the cabinet contents. When assembling, support the front from below and do not hold it by the handle. Insert the screws from the back, tighten them hand-tight first, check the fit, and only then tighten them firmly. Do not use a cordless drill on a high setting – over-tightened screws will destroy the thread in the wood-based material, and the handle will loosen after a short time. For new drill holes, mark the positions, align with a spirit level, and use a template so that all handles are at the same height. Drill into coated chipboard with a sharp wood drill bit and low speed to avoid tearing out at the front. After a few weeks, re-tighten all screws once, as screws will settle in the wood-based material. Care of the high-gloss surface: A polished surface shows fingerprints, water spots, and grease splatters much more clearly than a brushed one – this is part of the look and can only be compensated by regular wiping. Use a soft microfiber cloth, lightly moistened if necessary, and always wipe dry afterward, as drying water droplets leave limescale marks. Do not use abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or scouring pads with a rough side, as high-gloss surfaces show every tiny scratch. Do not use metal polish, vinegar cleaner, or citric acid, as the surface is coated and these agents will remove the coating. Wipe off grease splatters in the kitchen promptly before they dry. Do not use the handle as a climbing aid or towel rail.

For anyone who wants to change a kitchen and needs a screwdriver instead of a craftsman.
