Description

The old chest of drawers from the attic with missing handles – when shiny new hardware from the DIY store immediately stands out next to aged wood, and bare chrome makes every heirloom look modern

The piece of furniture stands there, the wood has a patina, the drawers still run, and two out of six fronts are missing a handle. The replacement from the DIY store is polished to a shine and gleams so uniformly that next to a hundred-year-old oak, it immediately looks new. Chrome and high-gloss brass change the character of the entire piece of furniture, making an heirloom look like a copy. Anyone wanting to fit an old chest of drawers, a farmhouse cabinet, or a country-style kitchen with hardware that doesn't push itself into the foreground needs a surface with depth instead of shine. This furniture knob combines a calm mushroom shape with an antique-treated brass surface, whose dark pattern runs unevenly.

What makes this furniture knob different

  • Antique treatment instead of high gloss – the surface is deliberately darkened and unevenly stained, so it doesn't stand out as a new part next to aged wood; a polished knob, on the other hand, draws attention and makes the furniture piece questionable.
  • Calm mushroom shape without embellishment – the smooth curve needs no ornament and therefore works on farmhouse furniture as well as on simple country-style fronts; ornate knobs, on the other hand, commit to a specific style.
  • Uneven pattern of the patina – the dark spots are distributed differently on each piece, which is why a row of eight knobs on a chest of drawers looks vibrant instead of serial.
  • Curved top for two-finger grip – the dome fills the thumb and forefinger and can be gripped even with wet hands, while flat knobs slip off the edge.
  • Central screwing from the back – the knob is attached via a single hole and thus fits the existing drillings of most older furniture without needing to drill new holes.
  • Compact size of 33 × 34 mm with a projection of 12 mm (1.3 × 1.3 × 0.5 inches) – the knob protrudes only slightly and won't snag on clothing in narrow hallways, on chests of drawers in passageways, or on cabinet doors.

Who it's for

For anyone refurbishing an old piece of furniture and looking for fittings that don't look like new goods. For inherited chests of drawers, farmhouse cabinets, verticos, and secretaries where handles are missing or damaged. For flea market finds and restored second-hand furniture. For country-style kitchens, vintage kitchens, and lacquered kitchen fronts in muted colors. For tenants who are not allowed to make structural changes but can unscrew handles and reattach them when moving out. For furniture that has been newly painted and needs matching fittings. For bedside tables, sideboards, and wardrobes whose original handles don't match the room. For bathroom vanity units and washstands in country style. For built-in closets in the hallway and attic. For DIY enthusiasts and anyone who regularly refurbishes furniture. For holiday homes, mountain huts, and guesthouses with rustic furnishings. As a gift for people who enjoy restoring things themselves. Important selection note: The price is for a single knob – for a chest of drawers with several drawers, the quantity must be selected accordingly. Two sizes are offered, whose dimensions differ significantly; the round shape shown corresponds to the smaller version measuring 33 × 34 mm. Before ordering, check whether the existing front has a single hole – with two holes for a bail pull, a knob cannot simply be used. As this is an antique treatment, the pattern will vary for each piece and differ from the product photo; with multiple knobs, they will also differ from each other. Whether screws are included and in what length can be found in the product selection.

Measuring, mounting, proper care

Before buying, unscrew the old fitting and check whether the front has one or two holes. If there are two existing holes, either switch to a bail pull or fill the holes with wooden dowels, glue, and then sand. Measure the front thickness so that the screw length fits: Screws that are too short won't grip, and those that are too long will protrude inside and hit the drawer contents. For old furniture, also check if the wood at the hole is worn out – in this case, a glued wooden dowel helps, into which a new hole is then drilled. When mounting, support the front from below and do not hold it by the knob. Insert the screw from the back and initially tighten it hand-tight, check the fit, and only then tighten it firmly. Do not use a power drill on a high setting – overtightened screws destroy the thread in the wood, and the knob will loosen again after a short time. For new drillings, mark the positions, align them with a spirit level, and use a template so that all knobs are at the same height. After a few weeks, retighten all screws once, as screws tend to settle, especially in old wood. For cleaning, use only a dry or slightly damp cloth and wipe dry immediately. No metal polish, no brass paste, no abrasive cleaners, and no acidic cleaners: The dark pattern is an applied treatment and will be removed by polishing at the domes – leaving a bare spot that cannot be restored. Dab off grease splatters in the kitchen promptly before they dry, and do not rub. Do not use steam cleaners or leave damp cloths on the surface for extended periods. On heavily used drawers, the patina at the grip points will lighten over time; this is inherent to the process and cannot be reversed. If you want a permanently consistent surface, you should choose a coated fitting.

For all those who want to put an old piece of furniture back into use without taking away its age.
